Hayden Comments On Ducati Test by dean adams Monday, October 27, 2008
It's hard to imagine that there could have been one more new factor thrown Nick Hayden's way today at the Valencia MotoGP test. He's on a new bike, the Ducati MotoGP racer, on new Bridgestone rubber, with a new team and working with a new to him crew. Listening to him, he sounds like the day might have been a bit of a blur.
A big red blur.
"Like I told my brother, I don't know what they pay Casey but it's not enough. They need to double it," Hayden said, "because this thing can be a monster." Hayden was twelfth-fastest out of eighteen riders today at Valencia. He rode both the GP8 and GP9 machines. Tomorrow he will concentrate on the GP9 Ducati with carbon fiber frame.
"It was about what I expected," Hayden said this afternoon. "I didn't think it would be easy and I also didn't think it was going to be a disaster. I can see the potential of the bike; but it's also going to take a lot to get it out of it too. I knew that I wasn't just going to twist the throttle and go fast."
Hayden rode nearly all day. He used two new tires all day, one of which went 35 laps and "still felt the same as new".
It was the American's first day on Bridgestone tires as well with an entire career spent on Dunlop and then Michelin rubber. "The front Bridgestone (tire) has a lot of hype and I can see why. You can trail brake so hard into the last corner here at Valencia and it'll take it. I need to find the limit, especially on the front."
Hayden repeatedly deflected the assembled press' attempts to get his to compare the Ducati and Honda machinery he'd ridden in the last 24 hours. "I'm still under contract to Honda so I can't compare them," he said. "Also, I don't want to fill out a list for Honda in alphabetical order on how they could improve their bike," Hayden joked.
One facet of the Marlboro Ducati team that will be different is the sharing of data between riders Casey Stoner and Hayden. "I've already talked to Casy and seen his data," Hayden said. "Yeah, it's definitely a different way of doing things (than what I am used to). Like I've said, the way that Rossi is riding now it's going to take a big effort on the part of a team and a manufacturer. These guys have the right idea: two guys working together, pushing each other, making it better."
Awake in his bed before the alarm went off this morning, Hayden was anticipating a busy and exciting day. "Usually if you test a day after a race you're dragging yourself around, but I was wide awake. It's a big deal. I want this to work so bad it's scary."
Hayden refused to throw more verbal rocks at Dani Pedrosa or his much-criticized manager, saying "That's a dead subject for me."
"I didn't feel alien on the bike," Hayden said. "It felt a little strange on the first few exits but it's not like I wanted to go over and tell the crew that I needed new handlebars and footpegs right away. I just rode. It's not like I can call my dad and tell him that we're good, he can let the dogs out. We have lots of work to do. But you won't find me climbing up a tall building either."
"I didn't want to get in too deep. We have time," he said. "I think that in three or four months we should have a good handle on it. If I don't learn it by the time we get to Qatar then I'm probably not going to have learned it by the time we get back here next year this time."

The GP9's tail pipe isnt as sexy as the GP8 I got my fingers and toes crossed, I hope Hayden clicks with his new toy and do well in 2009. Will Honda have lost another great rider? I think they already have. Hayden's gain. Honda's loss. Haha!!

Valencia Test Final Day: Hayden Fastest by staff Tuesday, October 28, 2008
These PR missives just arrived:
Tuesday Oct 28 2008 Valencia Testing Session - Day 2
NICKY HAYDEN FASTEST AT WET VALENCIA
After enjoying perfect conditions yesterday, the second and final day of testing at Valencia was badly affected by adverse weather, with intermittent showers leaving the track in a constantly damp state. The riders decided to wait for the majority of the day to see if it relented but at around 15:30, with the asphalt still cold and wet, several of them finally took to the track. Casey Stoner who had set the pace on his GP9 yesterday, opted out and watched from pit-lane as his new team-mate Nicky Hayden made constant progress with the wet setting of the new bike, clocking a fastest lap of 1.48.287.
Nicky Hayden - 1'48.287 (20 laps)
"I would have preferred to have another dry day today because we still had a lot of things to try with the bike but at least I got chance to get a first feel for it in the wet. We've seen with the way the rain has followed us around this season how important it is to have experience in these conditions. to. After my first run I said to myself, "wow, you're so slow!" But then we made some small changes and I felt better. We haven't really played around with the setting too much today because at the moment the most important thing is to try and adapt to the bike, the tyres, the team and their way of working and communicating. I have to be careful not to speak too fast or use too much slang! Joking aside, I know I have a lot of hard work to do but I'm ready for it and so is the team. I haven't asked for too many changes because Casey has already shown what this bike can do and now it's up to me to do the same.". Record: Casey Stoner (Ducati - 2008) 1'32.582 Pole position: Valentino Rossi (Yamaha - 2006), 1'31.002 Times Tuesday 28th 1. Hayden (Ducati) 1'48.287 (20 Laps) 2. Dovizioso (Honda) 1'48.296 (18) 3. Melandri (Kawasaki) 1'48.786 (26) 4. Canepa (Ducati) 1'49.917 (25) 5. Kallio (Ducati) 1'50.275 (26) 6. Elias (Honda) 1'54.057 (16) 7. Capirossi (Suzuki) 1'57.322 (7)

Ducati's technical director Filippo Preziosi believes the team has made 'the right choice' by signing Nicky Hayden after the American completed a successful first test for the team at Valencia this week.
Hayden, who was fastest of all on the wet second day of the shortened test at the Spanish track, impressed the team with his bravery and his swift integration with the engineers.
"He certainly is very brave," Preziosi told Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport. "With the telemetry you can see that in certain situations the bike wobbles in a scary way, even more than with [Casey] Stoner, but he doesn't get off the gas.
"I think we've made a good choice."
Speaking of Hayden's relationship with Stoner, Preziosi added: "It looks like from the first moment there's been great accord between the two of them, also helped by the fact that they speak the same language.
"I don't know whether it'll be the best rider pairing we've ever had, but for sure it will be very harmonious."
Preziosi also indicated that Ducati were happy with the first run of an evolution engine used in the carbon-fibre GP9.
"We were a bit afraid," he said. "Here we had an evolution - never gone on track, not even with test rider [Vittoriano] Guareschi - of what Casey tried in Barcelona.
"Even on the installation lap he did to prepare the bike for the riders, Vittoriano told us it was a good step forward. Most of all in smoothness and progression.
"Casey liked it very much too. The power is still the same, because that's practically imposed by the limitation on the amount of fuel. We've worked on the usual things: fluid dynamics and reduction of frictions. We'll see if it's enough."
